Cervical Screening
Cervical screening tests (also known as a smear test) are usually taken by the Practice Nurse. Women aged between 25 - 65 are invited by the Health Authority to make an appointment. It is preferable to take this test between the 9th and 20th day of your menstrual cycle. If you are due your cervical screening you can book online or via the surgery.
The test can detect cell changes in the cervix (neck of the womb) that can sometimes lead to cancer. If the changes are present, treatment is nearly always simple, effective and without major surgery - this is a preventative test to stop cancer before it starts. Tests are recommended every 3 - 5 years according to National guidelines.
Contraception
At the Grove Medical Centre all GPs and several practice nurses offer Contraceptive advice.
Our Nursing Team offers Oral contraception and Injectable Progesterone contraception prescribing, advice and regular reviews.
We also have a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who also fit, remove and change Intrauterine devices (Coils – both copper and hormonal) and Implants (progesterone – Nexplanon).
All these services are on an appointment only basis, which is initially offered over the phone, and followed up with a Face to Face consult at the practice if required.
We provide this service to all our registered patients, and also to patients registered with other local GP practices where there is no facility for Coil or Implant insertion/removal.
For any contraception related query, in the first instance please contact our Patient Services Team on 01935 810900
Please see the links below for more information about the different contraceptives we offer.
- Contraception Methods
- Contraceptive Implant
- Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (Coil)
- Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC)
- Intrauterine System (IUS)
Minor Operations
Minor procedures such as removal of skin lesions, joint injections and freezing therapy can be performed by your GP. Please book an appointment with your GP if you feel you have a condition that would benefit from minor surgery.
Travel Vaccinations
The Practice Nurses can offer the full range of foreign travel immunisations, including Yellow Fever and up-to-date advice for travelling abroad. However you will probably need time to have the necessary course so try to attend at least 8 weeks before travel.
Please download or call at the surgery to complete a Travel Questionnaire so that the Practice Nurse can ensure that you have the correct advice and immunisations. There will be a charge for some non NHS vaccinations but please discuss this when you first consult the Practice Nurse regarding your travel requirements. A Certificate of Vaccination can be provided.
We can provide Yellow Fever vaccination and certification although this will incur a charge.
Vaccinations & Immunisations
Children’s vaccinations take place regularly by appointment or at other times with the Practice Nurse if that is inconvenient. You will be sent an appointment date and time for your child when they are due their immunisations by Dorset Child Health. Adult vaccinations are done by appointment with the Practice Nurse. If you are travelling abroad, you may need additional vaccinations or malaria medication.
Hospital Referrals
We can refer you to hospital for a consultant opinion, you will be given choice as to where you can attend. We will use the Electronic Choose and Book Service where appropriate.
You may request a copy of your referral letter. Please ask the referring GP at the time of referral.
Health Visitor
Our Health Visiting team is concerned with the health of the whole community, but especially the under 5s. They visit all new babies and their mothers after the first week of life.
On registration, if you have small children, they will contact and visit you. Their aim is the promotion of health and early detection of ill health. They visit families as appropriate to discuss health and care of parents and their children. You can contact the Health Visitor by telephoning 01935 810 900 / 01935 813 438
District Nurses
The District Nurses are based at The Yeatman Hospital and provide nursing care to patients in their own homes who are unable to attend the surgery. They give practical advice or assistance to patients, relatives and carers in coping with illness.
They use the same clinical protocols as the Practice Nurses so that you have the same treatment whether at home or in the Practice. If you feel you need to be seen by a District Nurse please contact the surgery and we can arrange this for you.
Community Midwife
Our Community Midwives are responsible for antenatal and early postnatal care wherever you decided to deliver your baby. They offer weekly antenatal clinics here at the surgery where they work in close co-operation with the doctors and the local maternity units from both Yeovil and Dorchester. They will also help arrange a home birth. They are based at Yeovil District Hospital and should be contacted directly to arrange appointments here. They also have daily drop in clinics at the hospital. For more information or to speak to the midwives please call them on 01935 384449.
